To answer this question of worth, you have to consider a few things beyond pricing and what a photoshoot will cost. This question if a maternity photoshoot is worth it goes beyond that , you need to consider not only how how you are feeling now , and if you want this chapter for your future children and future self. And what you consider “worth it”

When I was pregnant with my third (and last!) baby, a friend of mine was also expecting. I loved being pregnant and she didn’t. Where I felt glowing, she felt swollen, nauseous, and exhausted. And I get it. Pregnancy doesn’t always feel like the magical season we see splashed across Instagram. And that may, for some, feel a little icky about photographing their pregnancy ( when they don’t feel at their best). Not everyone feels this way , some just want this beautiful start to life and family documented.

On social media, maternity photos can sometimes look a little over-the-top — dramatic gowns, contrived poses, golden sunsets. They’re absolutely stunning, but they’re not for everyone. Maybe the thought of being photographed that way makes you feel uncomfortable, and that’s completely okay. And maybe that’s what is holding you back , not all maternity photoshoots are a full on production. They can be intimate and true to you too.

The beauty of maternity photography is that there’s no one “right” way. Art can be flowing dresses in a field or barefoot in your kitchen or in your garden with your fur baby and a hosepipe . All are powerful. What matters is that it feels true to you.

So, are maternity photos worth it?
For me, both as a photographer and as a mum — absolutely yes.

Look at the photographers style ( not just editing) but does the aesthetic really move you ? If not – then find one that does and you have a chance of LOVING your images. Maternity photos are worth it because they capture something fleeting: the beginning. They remind you of the incredible thing your body is doing and give your children a way to connect with that time. My three kids all love seeing pictures of themselves “in my tummy.” As their mum, I’m so glad I made the effort to document it. These photos are not just for you now , they’re for your future self and your future family. Its not something that be recreated later either.

What to Wear to a Pregnancy Photoshoot

Option 1: From your wardrobe.
You don’t need to buy new. Many of my favourite images feature simple clothing that clients already own. Think: a dress that shows off your bump, a bikini, a tank, or even lingerie if that feels right. Comfort is key — I can’t edit out discomfort.

Option 2: Hire a dress.
If you’d love something special without the cost of buying it, here are a few maternity dress hire brands I recommend:

I’m all for being pampered in this season. I find buying a new outfit also creates excitement around your session. You need to spend a fortune either , a few key pieces can give the vibe you are dreaming of

When Is the Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot?

The sweet spot is between 30–36 weeks. By then, your bump has a beautiful round shape but you’re (hopefully) still comfortable enough to move around. I recommend booking before 26–28 weeks so you don’t miss out and so there’s room to reschedule for weather if needed.
